NICO (2020 Germany)
Directed by Eline Gehring
Produced by Sara Fazilat
Full length feature film
This film is mostly underscored by driving, pulsing monotonous synths with the occasional electric guitar and fender rhodes. The opening track is a dream-pop number that reflects the buoyancy of the main character "Nico".
Cadence of the Valley (2020 Jordan/Germany)
Directed by Rama Ayasra
Produced by Ibrahim Jacobi
Medium length fiction
A spiritual current runs through this atmospheric film and naturally, the nai (ney), a cane flute, plays a central role in the music, as well as the qanun (zither) and hand percussion. The music is fittingly slow moving and echoes the sound of generations of the shepherd lifestyle, from the lilting flute melodies blowing on the wind of the valley to the stomping percussive hit of sheeps' hooves.
Janitou (2019 Algeria/Germany)
Directed by Amine Hatou
Produced by Kaske Film
Full length documentary
For this documentary film, I was asked to bring a 60s Bollywood vibe to Algeria. The lyrics were inspired by some of the dialogue in the film. I chose to work with a languid electric guitar, melodic violins and qraqeb (Subsahan percussion instrument that is widespread in North Africa).
REVOLVO (2019 Germany)
Directed by Francy Fabritz
Produced by Sara Fazilat
Short fiction
The original music for this Thelma and Louise-type short film features beloved cabaret artist Sigrid Grajek and is reminescent of sultry ballads such as "Whatever Lola Wants". The Babelsberg Film Orchestra provides the colourful backdrop to the playfully troublemaking lyrics
